We were able to break ground on our school garden on February 13, 2009. Our garden spot is 28x28. The garden area was inclosed with hard plastic playground inclosures. We have chosen to have a raised garden. A heavy layer of top soil was placed in the garden area.
We have a community meeting planned for February 26th at 3:15 with numerous community leaders, school officials, a master gardener, and local garden companies. We will be discussing the garden and hope to receive numerous suggestions from this group.
On February 24th, our Youth Advisory Council on Nutrition will meet. This is a group of 10 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, 2 teachers, one parent, cafeteria personnel, and myself who will discuss what to plant in the garden.
At the present time I am leaning toward block gardening but will await input from these two meetings.
